DISTANCE PARAMETERS
In order to fill out your hard copy race result collection forms accurately, follow these guidelines for proper race distance format:
Thoroughbred and Arabian Distances
Thoroughbred and Arabian distances are measured in furlongs and miles.
Furlongs |
When recording race distances run at "furlongs", record the "whole furlong number" immediately followed by an "F". (For example, a race run at six furlongs should be recorded as "6F"). When recording a race distance run at a "whole furlong" plus a fraction of a furlong, record the whole furlong, a space, the "fractional" furlong, immediately followed by an "F". (For example a race run at six and one half furlongs should be recorded as 6 1/2F). |
Miles |
When recording a race run at "whole" miles, record the whole mile number, immediately followed by an "M". (for example, a race run at one mile would be recorded as 1M). When recording distances run at a "whole" mile, plus a "fraction of a mile", record the whole mile number, a space, the fraction of a mile, immediately followed by an "M". For example, a race run at a mile and one eighth would be recorded as 1 1/8M). |
Miles with Yards |
On some rare occasions, races will be run at a distance that combines furlongs with yards. To record this distance properly, list the number of furlongs, an "F", a space, the number of yards, immediately followed by a "Y". (For example, a race run at five furlongs and 70 yards will be recorded as 5F 70Y). More commonly, races are run at a combination of miles and yards. To record this distance, list the number of miles immediately followed by an "M", a space, the number of yards, immediately followed by a "Y". (For example, a race run at a mile and 70 yards will be recorded as 1M 70Y). |

Includes |
Any supplemental monies that are included in the base purse. These includes monies are typically state bred or Breeders' Cup supplements |
Plus |
Any supplemental monies that are added to the base purse. Generally, these monies are also derived from state bred or Breeders' Cup supplements. |

Any purse monies that were paid to others (not horses). Generally, these VALUE TO OTHERS are paid in association with breeder or nominator awards. |
Total Purse |
The sum of all monies available to be won. TOTAL PURSE is calculated by adding the program purse, any plus monies, and any added monies (including any nomination, entry and starter fees in stakes races). |
RACE CONDITIONS DESCRIPTION AND PARAMETERS
Races with conditions in addition to or other than age or sex usually include one or more of the following conditions. These race conditions will be collected and stored in the Equibase database according to the categories and codes noted below.
NOT ALL RACES WILL HAVE RACE CONDITIONS. IN ADDITION TO "OPEN" RACES WITH NO CONDITIONS, THE FOLLOWING RACE TYPES WILL NEVER HAVE RACE CONDITIONS:

RACE RESTRICTIONS

Restricted |
S |
Statebred Restriction |
A |
Auction Restriction |
ALW - Allowance race
A race for which the racing secretary drafts certain conditions to determine
weights to be carried based on the horse's age, sex and/or past performance.
AOC - Allowance/Optional Claiming
This race type combines features associated with two traditional race types,
Allowance and Claiming races. Hoses may be entered under Allowance conditions
(not eligible to be claimed, but must qualify for the conditions of the race)
OR entered for a claiming price if they do not qualify for the race conditions.
CLH - Claiming Handicap
Arace for horses entered to be claimed, with weight assignments similar to
those of a handicap race (see Handicap listed above).
CLM - Claiming
Claiming races are the most commonly run races in the country. Horses competing
in claiming races are offered for sale for a specified priced to eligible
buyers.
CST - Claiming Stakes
A race for horses entered to be claimed. Nomination and possibly entry and
starters fees are added to the base purse.
HCP - Handicap
This race type refers to a race where the weights are assigned by the tracks
Racing Secretary or Handicapper based upon past performances. Their goal is to
assign weight to each horse so that all entrants have an equal chance of
winning the race. THERE IS NO ADDED MONEY IN A HANDICAP RACE.
MAT - Match Race
A match race is a race that involves just two horses. It can be run under a
number of conditions, but generally is run in allowance or handicap
conditions. To qualify as a match race, only two horses were entered in
the race. The race does not qualify as a match race if more than two horses
originally entered the race and some were scratched, making it a two-horse
field.
MCL - Maiden Claiming
Maiden claiming races are for horses that have never won a race and are
eligible to be claimed
MOC - Maiden Optional Claiming
This type race is restricted to maidens (non-winners lifetime) that run under
the conditions exactly as those for optional claiming races (see Optional
Claiming).
MSA - Maiden Starter Allowance
This race is for non-winners that have started for a specified claiming price
or less.
MSW - Maiden Special Weight
These races are reserved for horses that have never won a race. They are not
eligible to be claimed. The term special weight is derived from the fact that
arbitrary weights are assigned to horses by age. (e.g. 3 year olds 118 pounds,
older 122 pounds.)
MST - Maiden Stakes
A stakes race limited to non-winners.
OCH - Optional Claiming Handicap
This type race is an Optional claiming race that is run under Handicap
conditions. (See both race types listed for a further explanation).
OCL - Optional Claiming
This race type is quite involved and incorporates features of starter allowance
and claiming races. Horses competing in this type of race can either compete as
a claimer, or as a starter allowance horse, with no claiming price. Those
competing in this race that are not eligible to be claimed must have competed
at or below the claiming level specified, and have not won a race at the
specified claiming or higher since last competing at the specified claiming
level or a lower claiming price.
SHP - Starter Handicap
This category is reserved for horses that have been running in inferior
claiming company, but have improved to the point that they would not be risked
being sold in a claiming race. In effect this race is an allowance race
restricted to horses that have previously run in a claiming race at a specific
level (e.g. starters for a claiming price of $5,000). In a starter handicap
race, horses are weighted similar to a handicap race.
SOC - Starter/Optional Claiming
This race type is another hybrid of two race types, Starter Allowance and Claiming.
To run as an allowance horse (not eligible to be claimed), the
horse must have started for a specified claiming price or less in a specified
timeframe. Horses not eligible under the Starter Allowance conditions may run,
but they must compete for the claiming price.
SST- Starter Stakes
This stakes race is limited to horses that have started for a specific claiming
price or less in a specified timeframe.
STK - Stakes
Races are classified as stakes races when the meet two basic criteria, 1) They have
money added to the base purse of the race in the form of nomination, entry and
or starter fees paid by owners; 2) Nominations for a stakes race must close at
least 72 hours prior to its running.
Stakes races can be under allowance conditions (weight off allowed based upon
number of wins or money won); handicap conditions (Racing Secretary or
Handicapper assigns weight based upon past performances with the goal of giving
each horse an equal chance to win the race) or weight for age conditions, (each
horse carries equal weights based upon their age and sex).
STR -Starter Allowance
Starter allowance races are identical to starter handicap races with the only
difference that horses competing in this race are weighted through allowance
conditions (i.e. number of races or money won).
TRL - Trial
An allowance race that serves as a qualifier for an upcoming added money race.
WCL - Waiver Claiming
A claiming race where one or more participants is allowed to race without the
possibility of being claimed after coming off an extended layoff and is running
in a claiming race that has a claiming price equal to or greater than their
last start in a claiming race.
WMC - Waiver Maiden Claiming
A claiming race for non-winners where one or more participants is allowed to
race without the possibility of being claimed after coming off an extended
layoff and is running for a claiming race that has a claiming price equal to or
greater than their last start in a claiming race.

TRACK CONDITIONS AND DESCRIPTION
Dirt Track
FT |
Fast |
Completely dry and
at optimal efficiency. |
WF |
Wet Fast |
Occurs immediately after a
heavy rain; track has surface water on it, but the base is still solid,
accounting for times similar to (or even faster than) a fast track. |
SY |
Sloppy |
As the track
continues to accumulate moisture, the base is still solid but water is
beginning to seep into the base; SURFACE WATER IS EVIDENT. |
MY |
Muddy |
. Moisture has permeated
the base of the track; times are somewhat slower and running tires the horses
more. |
SL |
Slow |
The racing surface has
begun to dry out; the base is still soft, but surface drying is evident;
times are generally slower than normal |
HY |
Heavy |
Similar to Muddy, track
surface is deep and consistency is thick, an obvious slowing of times will be
apparent as will the tiring of front runners. |
GD |
Good |
The drying process
continues, times improve and the track is approaching a FAST condition. Some
flying dust may be evident. |
FZ |
Frozen |
As a result of sustained
low temperatures, ice particles have formed on the racing surface. |
The condition of the base of the track determines whether it is Sloppy or Muddy track. Therefore a muddy track will not be reclassified as Sloppy simply because subsequent rains have left surface water on the track -- the track is simply muddier than it was.
Turf Course
HD |
Hard |
Surface is hard and horses do not have normal cushion of the course; frequently follows periods of drought and high temperatures. |
FM |
Firm |
Equivalent to Fast on s Dirt Track; course is dry and at peak efficiency. |
GD |
Good |
The drying process continues, times improve and the track is approaching a FIRM condition. Fewer divots may be evident. |
YL |
Yielding |
Usually following some wet weather; horses' hooves dig up the course and divots are flying; times are slower |
SF |
Soft |
Usually following prolonged wet weather; horses' hooves sink in and dig up the course; times are considerably slower. |
